The Cookware Critic

How to Choose Cookware Material (Interactive Quiz)

Not sure which cookware material suits your cooking style? Answer 6 quick questions and get a personalized recommendation with honest tradeoffs.

People spend hours reading comparison articles and end up more confused than when they started. Cast iron versus stainless versus carbon steel versus nonstick, and every material has passionate defenders. How you cook, clean and handle the pan matters more than an all-purpose ranking.

This short quiz asks about the habits that affect which surface works for you. Answer honestly about your habits (not your aspirations) and you'll get a personalized recommendation with the tradeoffs laid out clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a nonstick pan on an induction cooktop?

We would check the exact pan base with a magnet or its manufacturer's induction rating. A coating alone says nothing about whether the metal underneath will heat on induction.

Is ceramic nonstick always independently verified as PFAS-free?

No. We would check the specific brand's test evidence or disclosed coating composition; claims do not all have the same independent backing.

Can I cook acidic sauces in a bare cast iron or carbon steel pan?

We would choose stainless steel or enameled cast iron for frequent acidic cooking. Acid can affect seasoning where bare iron is exposed, especially on a newly seasoned pan.

Does the quiz score predict how long my pan will last?

No. We use the scores to order materials by your preferences, not to assign a service life to a particular pan. For replacement costs, compare your own prices in the cost calculator.
